Michael Salerno is a Certified Hypnotist through the National Guild of Hypnotists.  He works with clients in a variety of areas including smoking cessation, weight management, and stress reduction.  Michael collaborates with his clients to formulate a plan to help them achieve their goals.  His sessions allow the client to tap into the abilities that they already possess to enter a self-hypnotic state of focused concentration and awareness.  When his clients enter a self-hypnotic state, Michael capitalizes on the skills, talents, and resources that they already own to help them realize their goals and achieve even more.  Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication and Theatre Arts from Western Connecticut State University in 1995 and a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2011.  His master’s thesis examined the relationship between an individual’s personality and their ability to be hypnotized. He resides in Saugerties, NY.

Most people seem to know more about what hypnosis is not rather than what it is. So let’s first dispel the myths. Here is what hypnosis is not:

Hypnosis is not loss of control or weakening of the will

You are always in full control, and you are aware of what is going on. Hypnosis helps you let go of some of that ordinary restrictive control you may normally impose on yourself. In that sense, you will never accept any suggestion in hypnosis that you wouldn’t ordinarily approve of.

Hypnosis is not dangerous

Hypnosis doesn’t do anything to you. It produces no physiological changes other than those produced by relaxation.

Hypnosis is not supernatural or mysterious

Hypnosis is a natural state that people slip in and out of spontaneously many times a day often without being aware of it. Whenever you’re giving attention more to one thing to the exclusion of others, you are experiencing hypnosis. Whenever you are engrossed in a good book or movie, or daydreaming or staring, you are experiencing hypnosis.

Hypnosis is not magic or trickery

All hypnotic accomplishments are strictly in accordance with natural laws. You won’t lose 50 pounds by Saturday night. You won’t be speaking French fluently by tomorrow morning if you’ve never studied the language. The results often do seem miraculous and magical because they can be so rapid in comparison with other methods.

So what IS hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration, usually accompanied by deep relaxation, in which your mind is more receptive to ideas – ideas that you want  it to be receptive to. You decide what is to get all of your attention. Hypnosis helps you concentrate on it to the exclusion of everything else until you make it a reality in your mind.  Hypnosis won’t make you into something or someone you aren’t, but it will help something that’s already there to be realized. Hypnosis works at freeing you up to use more of the potential you already have.

Imagination is the key and the degree to which you can vividly imagine something, the greater the impact it will have on you. The visualization of goals with words, pictures, and emotions in a deeply relaxed state make their achievement rapid and permanent.
